QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> U.S. Special Envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, said on Friday that a political and security agreement between Syria and Israel is increasingly within reach, but that progress remains slow due to Israeli mistrust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barrack’s comments came during the Milken Institute Middle East and Africa Summit in Abu Dhabi, only days after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said a deal with Syria was theoretically achievable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barrack told The National<\/em><\/a> that Washington sees phased normalization\u2014beginning with border arrangements and security zones\u2014as the most realistic path forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy personal view on the President’s desire is we’ll get a deal there, starting with the security and border agreement, utilisation of zones, moving towards normalisation, has to be the answer,\u201d he said. “I think Israel wants that too.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the envoy, the Syrian transitional government has been \u201ctotally co-operative\u201d with U.S. demands, particularly regarding early-stage coordination with Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that Damascus understands that \u201cpart of the solution is a deal with Israel,\u201d despite what he described as persistent efforts by \u201cenemy combatants\u201d to disrupt political progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEverything we ask them to do, and dragging them towards Israel, they’re doing it. Israel is not trusting yet, so it\u2019s pretty slow,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
