{"id":132883,"date":"2025-12-06T05:51:24","date_gmt":"2025-12-06T05:51:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=132883"},"modified":"2025-12-06T05:51:26","modified_gmt":"2025-12-06T05:51:26","slug":"canada-removes-syria-hts-from-terrorism-related-lists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/132883\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada removes Syria, HTS from terrorism-related lists"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>Canada announced on Friday the removal of Syria from its List of Foreign State Supporters of Terrorism and the delisting of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) from its List of Terrorist Entities, following what officials described as an extensive review of Ottawa\u2019s counterterrorism designations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decisions were unveiled on Dec. 4 by Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree, who stressed that the measures reflect evolving conditions in Syria after the collapse of the Assad regime and the emergence of a transitional government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/global-affairs\/news\/2025\/12\/canada-announces-measures-related-to-syria.html\">According to the ministers<\/a>, the review aligned Canada\u2019s policies with recent steps taken by allies, including the United States and the United Kingdom, and aimed to support the Syrian transitional government\u2019s efforts to stabilize the country, advance an inclusive political transition, and work with international partners against extremist threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCanada welcomes the positive steps taken by the Syrian transitional government since the end of the Assad regime towards a peaceful Syrian-led political transition,\u201d said Anand, reaffirming Ottawa\u2019s commitment to Syrians\u2019 aspirations for \u201can inclusive, stable and prosperous future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anandasangaree said Canada would continue to monitor security developments and act against any threats posed by the Islamic State (ISIS) and al-Qaeda. \u201cThe safety and security of Canadians will remain paramount,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the changes, Canada emphasized that sanctions and accountability mechanisms remain in force. Ottawa continues to sanction 225 individuals and 56 entities tied to the former Syrian government and maintains cooperation with international accountability bodies, including the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The delisting of HTS follows a statutory review of 18 designated terrorist entities; 17 others remain listed under Canada\u2019s Criminal Code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canada designated Syria as a Foreign State Supporter of Terrorism in 2012 under the State Immunity Act.
