{"id":132853,"date":"2025-12-04T08:46:34","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T08:46:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=132853"},"modified":"2025-12-04T08:46:36","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T08:46:36","slug":"un-security-council-makes-first-ever-visit-to-syria-a-year-after-assads-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/132853\/","title":{"rendered":"UN Security Council makes first-ever visit to Syria a year after Assad\u2019s fall"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> A United Nations Security Council (UNSC) delegation arrived on Thursday in Syria in the Council\u2019s first visit to the country since the UN\u2019s founding, Syrian state media reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trip comes just days before the first anniversary of the ousting of former president Bashar al-Assad and is viewed as a significant step in reshaping relations between the UN and Syria\u2019s new authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The delegation entered through the Jdeidet Yabus border crossing with Lebanon and is scheduled to meet senior Syrian officials and representatives of civil society, according to the state-run SANA news agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shortly after arrival, the diplomats toured the heavily damaged Damascus suburb of Jobar, one of the areas most devastated during the 14-year conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Security Council envoys are expected to meet President Ahmad al-Sharaa, whose forces led the December 2024 offensive that removed Assad from power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The delegation will also travel to Lebanon on Friday and Saturday for meetings related to the fragile year-old ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of efforts to reestablish its presence in Syria, the UN recently lifted sanctions on al-Sharaa. The organization has urged the new authorities to ensure an inclusive political transition in a country fractured along ethnic, sectarian, and regional lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Slovenian Ambassador Samuel \u017dbogar, whose country holds the rotating Security Council presidency, said earlier this week that the visit marks \u201cthe first official Security Council visit to the Middle East in six years, the first visit to Syria ever.\u201d He described the timing as critical for both Syria and Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u017dbogar noted that trust between the UN and Damascus remains strained. \u201cThere\u2019s still a bit of lack of trust in the UN\u2013Syria relationship, which we try to bridge with this visit,\u201d he said.
