{"id":132232,"date":"2025-11-18T07:05:41","date_gmt":"2025-11-18T07:05:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=132232"},"modified":"2025-11-18T07:05:43","modified_gmt":"2025-11-18T07:05:43","slug":"imf-launches-cooperation-program-to-support-syrias-economic-recovery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/132232\/","title":{"rendered":"IMF launches cooperation program to support Syria\u2019s economic recovery"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>The International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced on Monday night that it plans to launch an intensive cooperation program with Syria, which includes providing technical assistance to improve the country\u2019s economic data and laying the groundwork for the resumption of annual policy reviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A team of IMF staff visited Damascus on Nov. 13 to assess Syria\u2019s current economic conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ron van Rooden, head of the IMF mission to Syria, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/news\/articles\/2025\/11\/17\/pr-25377-syria-imf-staff-concludes-staff-visit-to-damascus\">said<\/a>, \u201cSyria\u2019s economy is showing signs of recovery and improving prospects, reflecting the improvement in consumer and investor sentiment under Syria\u2019s new regime, Syria\u2019s gradual re-integration with the regional and global economy as sanctions are being lifted, and the return of more than one million refugees.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rooden added that the financial discussions focused on shaping the government\u2019s 2026 budget, which aims to expand fiscal space to meet essential needs, including support for vulnerable social sectors, while ensuring the budget is based on ambitious but realistic assumptions regarding revenue and financing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He explained that IMF experts will provide extensive technical support to strengthen Syria\u2019s fiscal framework by improving public financial and revenue management, finalizing new tax legislation, and developing a strategy to address Syria\u2019s longstanding debt and enhance debt management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rooden emphasized the importance of ensuring that the new tax system is simple, competitive, and easy to administer while avoiding excessive exemptions. He noted that similar reforms are needed as authorities restructure state-owned enterprises and seek large-scale investment projects in partnership with the private sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that the IMF will also assist Syrian authorities in drafting new financial sector legislation and regulations, rehabilitating payment systems and banking services, and rebuilding the central bank\u2019s capacity to effectively implement monetary policy and supervise the financial system.
