{"id":132226,"date":"2025-11-18T06:10:59","date_gmt":"2025-11-18T06:10:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=132226"},"modified":"2025-11-18T06:11:01","modified_gmt":"2025-11-18T06:11:01","slug":"syrian-refugees-undecided-on-return-one-year-after-assads-fall-irc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/132226\/","title":{"rendered":"Syrian refugees undecided on return one year after Assad\u2019s fall \u2013 IRC"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMSIHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> Nearly a year after the fall of the Assad-led government, most Syrian refugees in Jordan and Lebanon remain uncertain about returning home, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) said on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its fourth refugee intentions survey, based on interviews with nearly 4,000 Syrian refugees, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rescue.org\/press-release\/irc-nearly-one-year-fall-assad-led-government-majority-syrian-refugees-remain\">IRC<\/a> found that only 25 percent intend to return to Syria. Nearly half\u201446 percent\u2014remain unsure, while 30 percent say they do not plan to return, citing continued insecurity, limited services, and concerns about reintegration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IRC noted that although more than one million refugees and two million internally displaced people have returned to their areas of origin, many found destroyed homes and overstretched or non-existent services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Syria\u2019s deteriorating economy continues to deepen humanitarian needs and hinder sustainable return, the IRC added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Infrastructure across the country remains severely damaged. More than half of water networks and 80 percent of electricity grids are destroyed or non-functional, leaving communities without reliable access to essential services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, explosive remnants of war also pose a major threat; in some areas, 87 percent of residents reported the presence of unexploded ordnance within 10 kilometers of their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Juan Gabriel Wells, IRC\u2019s Syria Country Director, said the findings highlight the gap between refugees\u2019 hopes and current conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cReturning under current circumstances is not the same as returning safely, with dignity, or with any guarantee of permanence,\u201d he said, warning that more than 16 million people inside Syria now need assistance amid shrinking global aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IRC urged host governments and donors to uphold voluntary, safe, and dignified return principles while continuing support for refugees in neighboring countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It called for sustained multi-year funding for humanitarian and early recovery efforts to help Syrians rebuild their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite political changes in Damascus, Syria continues to face widespread destruction, economic collapse, and high humanitarian needs.
