Syrian transitional government may soon join the U.S.-led Global Coalition to Defeat the Islamic State (ISIS) during Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa\u2019s anticipated visit to Washington have prompted a wave of mixed reactions among Syrian and Iraqi analysts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While some see the move as a milestone that could redefine Syria\u2019s regional and international standing, others caution that the decision could expose Damascus to complex political and security challenges once it becomes a formal party to the coalition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Joining but with conditions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Syrian political analyst Samir Abu Saleh told North Press that the transitional government\u2019s main objective is to establish security across Syrian territory, describing ISIS terrorism as a threat \u201cto both the state and the Syrian people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is only natural for the Syrian state to be militarily and politically engaged against anyone who threatens its security,\u201d Abu Saleh said, adding that Damascus\u2019s participation in international counterterrorism efforts is \u201cboth natural and expected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, he warned of a domestic challenge stemming from \u201cforeign or non-Syrian members\u201d who joined Syria\u2019s security institutions after the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSome of these figures remain controversial and are viewed by international actors as associated with terrorist groups, which could hinder Syria\u2019s full integration into the global counterterrorism effort,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Complex commitments and coordination with the SDF<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walid Choli, a Syrian Kurdish researcher at the al-Furat Center for Studies, told North Press that Syria\u2019s commitments after joining the Coalition would be \u201cfar more complex and demanding than those of other countries,\u201d due to the ongoing presence of ISIS cells and unresolved post-war issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDamascus will inherit a heavy legacy of ISIS-related files, including detainees, displaced families, and sleeper cells scattered across the desert,\u201d Choli said, pointing out that some detained fighters\u2019 cases pose \u201cmajor legal and security challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He emphasized that overlapping security structures and the continued presence of foreign fighters in Syria \u201cincrease the sensitivity of managing this file.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joining the Coalition, he said, \u201cwill not be a mere military step, but a conditional agreement imposing extensive obligations \u2014 from intelligence cooperation to greater transparency in political and security reform.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chouli added that the Coalition, comprising more than 80 member states, will require Syria to adopt \u201cclear legal and administrative standards\u201d in handling ISIS-related issues \u2014 including the prosecution of fighters, rehabilitation of individuals affected by extremist ideology, and preventing the politicization of the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He underscored that success would largely depend on \u201cDamascus\u2019s seriousness in cooperating with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the most effective force in the fight against ISIS.\u201d Implementing the March 10 Agreement, he said, \u201cwill be the cornerstone of a genuine national coordination and security partnership in the new Syria.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Toward a genuine political process<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iraqi political analyst Asaad al-Abadi said that Syria\u2019s prospective entry into the Coalition carries significant political weight and would require real concessions from the transitional government, \u201cforemost among them, engaging in a genuine and inclusive political process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He told North Press that joining the Coalition could help address the issue of foreign fighters by \u201cenhancing intelligence cooperation, facilitating prosecutions, and increasing pressure on remaining ISIS cells.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, al-Abadi cautioned that realizing these goals \u201cdepends on a fundamental shift in international and regional positions \u2014 as well as a change in Damascus\u2019s own approach.\u201d He concluded that while the move could open a new chapter for Syria, it would demand consistent
