QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press)<\/strong> \u2013 The Humanitarian and Development Cooperation Organization, in partnership with the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs, concluded on Monday a conference titled \u201cDealing with the Past Towards a Syrian Peacebuilding Mechanism\u201d in Kobani, northern Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event brought together around 50 participants, including activists, human rights advocates, politicians, academics, representatives from civil society organizations, and officials from the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organization\u2019s Executive Director, Bilind Malla Hassan, told North Press that the conference is part of a series of regional events under the \u201cDealing with the Past\u201d project, conducted in cooperation with the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs. \u201cFollowing similar conferences in Qamishli, Hasakah, Raqqa, and Deir ez-Zor, Kobani\u2019s conference focused on exploring and documenting local and national issues, as peacebuilding paths in Syria face multiple challenges,\u201d he said. He added that future conferences are planned in Aleppo and Idlib.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malla Hassan noted that the discussions will contribute to the broader Syrian justice and reconciliation processes. Recommendations emerging from the conference will be directed to local, national, and international actors, structured around key pillars of dealing with the past, including the right to truth, the right to justice, reparations, and guarantees of non-repetition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rights activist Rozif Ahmed Kino highlighted that participants also discussed the mechanisms and processes of transitional justice in Syria. \u201cKobani has endured significant violations and challenges, which must be legally documented to address the community\u2019s ongoing issues. The region requires a legally grounded transitional justice process,\u201d Kino said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference aimed to strengthen local engagement in peacebuilding and reconciliation efforts and ensure that the experiences of affected communities are systematically documented to inform both local and national decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
