{"id":131473,"date":"2025-10-27T11:43:26","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T11:43:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=131473"},"modified":"2025-10-27T11:43:28","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T11:43:28","slug":"iraq-mediates-between-damascus-tehran-amid-strategic-chill-in-relations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/131473\/","title":{"rendered":"Iraq mediates between Damascus, Tehran amid \u2018strategic chill\u2019 in relations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> Iraq has stepped up diplomatic efforts to mediate between Syria and Iran after relations between the two long-time allies soured following the ouster of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, political sources told <em>The New Region<\/em> on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sources said Baghdad is working quietly to rebuild bridges between Damascus and Tehran in what observers describe as an attempt to overcome a \u201cstrategic chill\u201d that has unsettled the regional balance since the rise of Syria\u2019s new government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials in Baghdad reportedly hope to leverage Iraq\u2019s geographic proximity and its strong ties with Iran to facilitate a new understanding between the two governments, whose once-aligned interests have recently diverged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thenewregion.com\/posts\/3459\"><em>The New Region<\/em><\/a> \u2013 an American website based in Erbil \u2013 cited political and intelligence sources as saying that Iraqi delegations\u2014including officials from the intelligence service and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs\u2014have made several unannounced visits to Damascus in recent months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During these meetings, they held discussions with senior Syrian officials aimed at reopening communication channels with Tehran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The talks reportedly followed Syrian-Russian consultations that exposed growing differences between Damascus and Tehran over Iran\u2019s future military and economic presence in Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iran, facing heightened domestic pressures and weakened regional influence after the \u201cTwelve-Day War\u201d with Israel in mid-2025, has requested Iraq\u2019s mediation to reestablish dialogue with the new Syrian leadership, the sources said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One individual familiar with the matter noted that \u201cBaghdad is playing a dual role. It provides Tehran with assessments of Damascus\u2019 position while offering the Syrian government proposals to reduce direct Iranian involvement in exchange for gradual economic and security cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Syria and Iran have been close allies since the early 1980s, when Damascus supported Tehran during the Iran\u2013Iraq War. Their partnership deepened during the Syrian conflict, with Iran providing extensive military, financial, and logistical support to the Assad government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tehran\u2019s backing, through the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and affiliated militias, helped Damascus regain control over large parts of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, relations have cooled in recent months following political changes in Damascus and shifting regional dynamics.
