{"id":131378,"date":"2025-10-25T06:18:46","date_gmt":"2025-10-25T06:18:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=131378"},"modified":"2025-10-25T06:18:47","modified_gmt":"2025-10-25T06:18:47","slug":"un-official-urges-swift-reconstruction-of-syria-to-ensure-stability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/131378\/","title":{"rendered":"UN official urges swift reconstruction of Syria to ensure stability"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) called for urgent international efforts to rebuild Syria after 14 years of conflict, warning that delayed reconstruction could deepen instability across the country and the wider Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rawhi Afaghani, UNDP\u2019s deputy representative in Syria, told AFP this week that \u201cafter 14 years of destruction, Syria must be swiftly rebuilt to bring stability to the country and the wider region.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stressed that \u201cthe international community should definitely rush into rebuilding Syria,\u201d noting that helping Syria recover \u201cis for the Syrians themselves, but also for the stability and the good of the whole region.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afaghani described the country\u2019s needs as \u201cmassive,\u201d pointing to widespread destruction of housing, schools, health centers, and basic infrastructure such as electricity and water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that recovery efforts are hampered by the presence of vast quantities of unexploded ordnance scattered across cities and towns \u2014 often buried under rubble that must first be cleared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While some Syrians have returned from neighboring countries, Afaghani cautioned that these returns are \u201cputting a lot of pressure on the infrastructure, on the transportation, on the education, on the bakeries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many returnees, he said, find themselves going back to destroyed homes or to properties now occupied by others, warning that such conditions \u201ccould lead to community tensions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afaghani acknowledged that the lack of basic services and employment opportunities is discouraging many displaced Syrians from returning home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe thought there would be a much higher rate of return,\u201d he said, adding that most of those who have come back did so from difficult conditions in Jordan and Lebanon, while \u201cfrom Europe, we don\u2019t see that massive return.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UN official expressed hope that a swift and comprehensive reconstruction effort could pave the way for \u201ca stable Syria,\u201d encouraging more refugees to return \u2014 particularly skilled professionals capable of contributing to rebuilding and stabilizing the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThose are high-skilled people \u2014 they can rebuild Syria,\u201d Afaghani said. \u201cThey could also be a big, good influence in the whole region from an economic perspective, and from a peace-building perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>By Jwan Shekaki<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) called for urgent international efforts to rebuild Syria after 14 years of conflict, warning that delayed reconstruction could deepen instability across the country and the wider Middle East.
