{"id":131344,"date":"2025-10-23T10:57:30","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T10:57:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=131344"},"modified":"2025-10-23T10:57:31","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T10:57:31","slug":"kurdish-displaced-committee-rejects-syrias-sere-kaniye-elections-as-illegitimate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/131344\/","title":{"rendered":"Kurdish displaced committee rejects Syria&#8217;s Sere Kaniye elections as illegitimate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>The Committee of Displaced People of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) in northeastern Syria declared on Thursday that the parliamentary elections being held in their city are \u201cillegitimate,\u201d denouncing them as a violation of the rights of thousands of displaced people who have been unable to return to their homes since 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an official statement, the committee said the elections \u201clack any legal or moral legitimacy and do not reflect the will of the city\u2019s original inhabitants,\u201d most of whom remain forcibly displaced as a result of Turkey\u2019s 2019 military operation and the subsequent control of the area by Turkish-backed armed groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cElections held under a de facto authority are legally and rightfully invalid,\u201d the statement read, calling the process \u201ca continuation of systematic demographic change.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the High Committee for Parliamentary Elections under the Syrian transitional government, the Sere Kaniye electoral body consists of 50 members tasked with electing one representative to the new People\u2019s Assembly, while the neighboring Tel Abyad body \u2014 also under Turkish-backed control \u2014 includes 100 members who will elect two representatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voting began Thursday morning at the Sere Kaniye Cultural Center and the People\u2019s Assembly headquarters in Damascus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Displaced Committee said that at least 85 percent of Sere Kaniye\u2019s original population now lives in displacement across northeastern Syria, particularly in Hasakah, Qamishli, and the Washokani camp, making the vote \u201cunrepresentative and unjust.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The committee reiterated that a fair political process must begin with the implementation of the March 10 agreement, guaranteeing displaced residents\u2019 safe return, property restitution, and the creation of a neutral environment for free and inclusive elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It called on the United Nations and international human rights organizations to intervene and halt \u201cillegal electoral practices that legitimize demographic change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Oct. 5, members of the electoral bodies across most Syrian governorates, excluding Suwayda, Raqqa, and Hasakah, cast their votes to elect the first People\u2019s Assembly in Syria since the fall of the al-Assad regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reporting by Abdulsalam Khoja<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Editing by Jwan Shekaki<\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) \u2013 The Committee of Displaced People of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) in northeastern Syria declared on Thursday that the parliamentary elections being held in their city are \u201cillegitimate,\u201d denouncing them as a violation of the rights of thousands of displaced people who have been unable to return to their homes since [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":11,"featured_media":131345,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"pgc_sgb_lightbox_settings":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[3,2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-131344","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-politics","category-syria"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.2 -
