{"id":130830,"date":"2025-10-11T11:11:34","date_gmt":"2025-10-11T11:11:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=130830"},"modified":"2025-10-11T11:11:35","modified_gmt":"2025-10-11T11:11:35","slug":"salary-increases-fail-to-ease-economic-hardship-syrian-official","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/130830\/","title":{"rendered":"Salary increases fail to ease economic hardship \u2013 Syrian official"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> Secretary of the Consumer Protection Association in the Syrian transitional government, Abdul Razzaq Habza, told North Press on Saturday that the average monthly expenditure for a family of five in Syria has reached nearly seven million Syrian pounds (SYP, about $625), reflecting a deepening economic crisis and declining purchasing power.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Habza explained that households are facing mounting financial strain, particularly with the approach of winter, as families struggle to secure heating materials, fuel, and winter clothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He warned that most Syrian families are unable to meet even basic heating needs, predicting that the coming winter \u201cwill be especially harsh for low-income households.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Habza added that the recent 200 percent public sector salary increase has had little effect in easing the crisis, as the sharp and ongoing rise in prices, coupled with fluctuations in the exchange rate, has severely eroded the real value of wages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Syria\u2019s economy has suffered a near-total collapse after more than 13 years of conflict, compounded by corruption, international sanctions, and the devaluation of the Syrian pound, which recently surpassed 20,000 SYP to the US dollar in some areas (now, it equals 11,500 SYP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite repeated government promises of reform and wage adjustments, the average monthly income remains far below the cost of living. According to economic observers, even after the latest salary hike, most state employees earn less than one million SYP (about $90) per month\u2014barely enough to cover a few days of basic household expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The worsening economic situation has forced many Syrians to rely on remittances from abroad, humanitarian assistance, or informal labor, while large segments of the population continue to face poverty, food insecurity, and inadequate access to essential services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reporting by Norman
