Haider\u2019s father is a university professor, and his mother works as a teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response, teachers and residents called for a general strike across schools in Latakia in solidarity with the abducted student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schools in Jableh city and its surrounding countryside also saw high rates of absenteeism, with some suspending classes entirely amid widespread anger and fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ministry of Education of the Syrian transitional government expressed \u201cdeep sadness and regret\u201d over the incident, stressing that \u201cthe safety and security of students and teachers is a shared responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ministry added that it is coordinating with the Ministry of Interior to take \u201cimmediate and decisive measures\u201d to protect the educational community and ensure the continuation of the learning process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reporting by Safaa Suleiman<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Editing by Jwan Shekaki <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LATAKIA, Syria (North Press) \u2013 Dozens of teachers and parents staged on Thursday a protest in the coastal city of Latakia, western Syria, condemning the kidnapping of a child near his school.
