{"id":130418,"date":"2025-10-01T08:04:27","date_gmt":"2025-10-01T08:04:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=130418"},"modified":"2025-10-01T08:32:33","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T08:32:33","slug":"germany-arrests-syrian-over-alleged-crimes-against-humanity-in-aleppo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/130418\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany arrests Syrian over alleged crimes against humanity in Aleppo"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> German authorities announced on Tuesday the arrest of a Syrian national suspected of committing crimes against humanity during the early years of the Syrian conflict in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The suspect, arrested on Sep. 30 and identified only as Anwar S. in accordance with German privacy laws, is accused of leading a shabiha militia loyal to former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the German Federal Prosecutor\u2019s Office, between April and November 2011, the militia under Anwar S.\u2019s command allegedly attacked peaceful demonstrators in Aleppo on at least eight occasions, primarily after Friday prayers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prosecutors said the militia used batons, metal rods, and electric shock devices to disperse protests, inflicting severe injuries on civilians. In one case, a detainee reportedly died as a result of torture while in custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The indictment further alleges that some protesters detained by Anwar S.\u2019s men were handed over to Syrian intelligence agencies, where they faced additional torture and mistreatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Germany has in recent years pursued several cases under the principle of universal jurisdiction, which allows courts to prosecute individuals for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide committed abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fall of Assad\u2019s regime in late 2024, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)\u2014a jihadist group that had previously cooperated with al-Qaeda and ISIS\u2014marked a turning point in Syria\u2019s conflict, leaving open questions about justice and reconciliation for the war\u2019s victims. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>By Jwan Shekaki<\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 German authorities announced on Tuesday the arrest of a Syrian national suspected of committing crimes against humanity during the early years of the Syrian conflict in 2011.
