{"id":130251,"date":"2025-09-27T05:53:43","date_gmt":"2025-09-27T05:53:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=130251"},"modified":"2025-09-27T05:53:47","modified_gmt":"2025-09-27T05:53:47","slug":"un-urges-repatriation-of-30000-isis-linked-families-from-hawl-camp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/130251\/","title":{"rendered":"UN urges repatriation of 30,000 ISIS-linked families from Hawl Camp"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> Six years after the defeat of the Islamic State (ISIS), tens of thousands of people with ties to the group remain detained in Northeast Syria\u2019s Hawl and other camps, the United Nations warned on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UN said the situation poses \u201ca serious humanitarian and security threat\u201d to regional stability, urging countries to accelerate repatriations, particularly as Syria undergoes political transition following the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 30,000 people\u2014mostly women and children\u2014are held in the camps, including about 8,500 foreign nationals from over 60 countries. An estimated 60 percent of detainees are under the age of 18, the UN said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2025\/09\/1165966\">UN officials described conditions<\/a> as \u201cdire and alarming,\u201d citing cases of sexual violence, child deprivation, and growing risk of radicalization amid reduced humanitarian access and recurring ISIS attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UN Acting Under-Secretary-General Alexandre Zouev warned that without swift action, the camps could become \u201cincubators of terrorist radicalization.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe fall of the Assad regime offers a window for decisive action,\u201d said Guy Ryder, UN Under-Secretary-General for Policy, stressing that repatriation \u201cis only the first step\u201d toward rehabilitation, reintegration, and justice for victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>By Jwan Shekaki<\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 Six years after the defeat of the Islamic State (ISIS), tens of thousands of people with ties to the group remain detained in Northeast Syria\u2019s Hawl and other camps, the United Nations warned on Friday.
