A mortar strike killed American reporter Marie Colvin, 56, of The Sunday Times, and French freelance photographer R\u00e9mi Ochlik, 28, shortly after they attempted to leave the building under fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several others were injured in the same incident, including French journalist Edith Bouvier, British photographer Paul Conroy, and their Syrian translator Wael al-Omar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alongside Bashar al-Assad, the warrants specifically target his brother Maher al-Assad, then commander of the elite Fourth Armored Division, former intelligence chief Ali Mamlouk, and former army chief of staff Ali Ayoub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cl\u00e9mence Bectarte, lawyer for the International Federation for Human Rights in Paris, described the warrants as \u201ca decisive step paving the way for a trial in France over the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Bashar al-Assad\u2019s regime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She added that the journalists had entered Homs secretly \u201cto document the crimes committed by Bashar al-Assad\u2019s regime\u201d and became victims of what rights groups describe as a deliberate, targeted strike on the press center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision marks the latest step by European courts to pursue accountability for atrocities committed during Syria\u2019s war.
