{"id":129170,"date":"2025-09-02T06:46:02","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T06:46:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=129170"},"modified":"2025-09-02T06:46:04","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T06:46:04","slug":"iaea-probes-uranium-traces-in-syria-amid-renewed-cooperation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/129170\/","title":{"rendered":"IAEA probes uranium traces in Syria amid renewed cooperation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Monday that it has discovered traces of uranium in Syria during an ongoing investigation into a site destroyed by Israel in 2007, which the agency has long suspected was an undeclared nuclear reactor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a confidential report seen by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/iaea-finds-uranium-traces-syria-linked-site-bombed-by-israel-2025-09-01\/\">Reuters<\/a>, the IAEA collected environmental samples in 2024 at three locations allegedly linked to the Deir al-Zor site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report revealed \u201ca significant number of natural uranium particles\u201d of anthropogenic origin, indicating they were processed chemically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report noted that the uranium was not enriched and did not provide a conclusion on its significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The current Syrian transitional government said they had \u201cno information\u201d explaining the presence of the particles but granted the IAEA renewed access to one site in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IAEA said it will continue evaluating the environmental samples and hopes the process will lead to resolving outstanding questions about Syria\u2019s nuclear past.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In June, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi met with Syrian Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa, who pledged full cooperation and transparency to clarify Syria\u2019s past nuclear activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grossi requested access to Deir ez-Zor itself in the coming months to review documentation and interview those involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2011, the IAEA concluded the facility, located in Deir ez-Zor desert, was \u201cvery likely\u201d a covert reactor that the former Syrian government had failed to declare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September 2007, Israel carried out an airstrike on the site in Deir ez-Zor claiming it was a nearly completed nuclear reactor being built with North Korean assistance. The then Syrian government denied the allegation, insisting the building was a military facility.
