{"id":128428,"date":"2025-08-19T08:54:46","date_gmt":"2025-08-19T08:54:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=128428"},"modified":"2025-08-19T08:54:48","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T08:54:48","slug":"wfp-warns-of-worsening-hunger-in-syria-as-wheat-shortages-deepen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/128428\/","title":{"rendered":"WFP warns of worsening hunger in Syria as wheat shortages deepen"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> The United Nations\u2019 World Food Program (WFP) warned on Tuesday that around three million Syrians risk facing severe hunger, adding to the already dire humanitarian crisis in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In written responses to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/historic-drought-wheat-shortage-test-syrias-new-leadership-2025-08-18\/\">Reuters<\/a>, the agency said that more than half of Syria\u2019s 25.6 million people are currently food insecure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHalf of the population is threatened to suffer from the drought, especially when it comes to the availability of bread, which is the most important food during the crisis,\u201d said Toni Ettel, the Food and Agriculture Organization\u2019s (FAO) representative in Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wheat production, a staple for millions of Syrians, is expected to plunge this year. Syria consumes about four million tons annually, but domestic output is projected to fall to just 1.2 million tons in 2025\u2014down 40 percent from last year, according to FAO figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shortfall is likely to push Syria\u2019s reliance on imports to record levels.
