DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) \u2013 The General Authority of Civil Aviation in Syria announced on Monday an ambitious plan aimed at expanding the operational capacity of the country\u2019s airports, targeting over five million passengers annually, as part of a broader strategy to revitalize Syria\u2019s civil aviation sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Omar al-Hasri, head of the General Authority of Civil Aviation, detailed the plan in an exclusive interview with the Syrian Al-Ikhbariya channel. He emphasized that the initiative will not only increase airport capacity but also generate nearly one million employment opportunities across education, training, and tourism sectors linked to air transport. The strategy seeks to reposition Syria as a pivotal hub in regional and international aviation routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The plan leverages Syria\u2019s strategic geographical location and aims to open the field for new local airline companies, while strengthening cooperation with regional and international partners to enhance air connectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A key component of the initiative involves converting Mezzeh Airport in Damascus into a dedicated facility for private and business aviation, catering specifically to the growing demand from corporate travelers. In northern Syria, Aleppo International Airport is set for expansion to accommodate up to two million passengers annually, thereby increasing its role in serving the northern region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, airports in Qamishli and Deir ez-Zor will undergo flexible, seasonal development tailored to the unique needs of the eastern regions, reflecting the varying demand and local dynamics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Regarding the aviation fleet, al-Hasri stated that the expansion plan extends through 2030, with initial additions of two to three aircraft before the end of 2025, followed by an incremental addition of one to two planes every quarter until the end of 2026. The plan includes bringing in international expertise and specialized trainers to qualify aviation personnel in line with global civil aviation standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
