{"id":126624,"date":"2025-06-19T08:04:56","date_gmt":"2025-06-19T08:04:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=126624"},"modified":"2025-06-19T08:04:58","modified_gmt":"2025-06-19T08:04:58","slug":"u-s-senators-introduce-bill-to-repeal-caesar-act-on-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/126624\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. senators introduce bill to repeal Caesar Act on Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> Two U.S. senators\u2014Democrat Jeanne Shaheen and Republican Rand Paul\u2014introduced on Wednesday a bipartisan bill aimed at repealing the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act of 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a joint <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreign.senate.gov\/press\/dem\/release\/ranking-member-shaheen-senator-paul-introduce-legislation-to-repeal-the-caesar-act-to-end-economic-sanctions-on-syria\">statement<\/a> released by their offices, the senators said the proposed legislation responds to \u201cgrowing recognition that while the Caesar Act achieved its goal of isolating the Assad regime, it now risks obstructing Syria\u2019s path toward stability, democracy and reconstruction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bill seeks to lift the broad, sweeping sanctions imposed under the Caesar Act, while maintaining U.S. mechanisms to hold Syrian officials accountable for human rights violations, according to the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Syrian people have a generational opportunity to write a new chapter for their country and the entire Middle East,\u201d Senator Shaheen, a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said. &#8220;For too long, the brutal Assad dictatorship, propped up by our adversaries Iran and Russia, has ruled with an iron fist.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shaheen emphasized that accountability for Syria\u2019s new authorities is possible \u201cwithout decimating the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senator Rand Paul echoed that sentiment, stating: \u201cWhile the Caesar Act was intended to isolate the Assad regime, it has ended up punishing everyday Syrians\u2014fueling poverty, crippling recovery, and blocking progress toward peace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This repeal is about restoring a more targeted, principled approach that holds bad actors accountable without inflicting unnecessary suffering on the very people we claim to support,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April, Senator Shaheen had also <a href=\"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/124827\/\">urged<\/a> the administration of President Donald Trump to remove barriers hindering expanded cooperation with the Syrian Transitional Government and to lift related sanctions. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>By Abdulsalam Khoja<\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) \u2013 Two U.S. senators\u2014Democrat Jeanne Shaheen and Republican Rand Paul\u2014introduced on Wednesday a bipartisan bill aimed at repealing the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act of 2019.
