{"id":124916,"date":"2025-04-25T17:54:20","date_gmt":"2025-04-25T17:54:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=124916"},"modified":"2025-04-25T18:30:44","modified_gmt":"2025-04-25T18:30:44","slug":"syrian-foreign-minister-raises-new-flag-at-un-headquarters-in-historic-ceremony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/124916\/","title":{"rendered":"Syrian Foreign Minister Raises New Flag at UN Headquarters in Historic Ceremony"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>By Kardo Roj<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press)<\/strong> \u2013 Syrian Foreign Minister As\u2019ad al-Shibani raised the country\u2019s new national flag on Friday in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York, marking a symbolic moment in Syria\u2019s post-conflict transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ceremony, described by the minister as a \u201chistoric moment filled with dignity,\u201d is the first time the new flag has been flown at the UN since the fall of the previous regime in late 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOn behalf of the Syrian Arab Republic, I stand today in a moment that overflows with dignity to raise our new Syrian flag at this global forum, for the first time after closing a painful chapter of our history,\u201d al-Shibani wrote in a post on Platform X (formerly Twitter).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new flag, introduced by Syria\u2019s transitional government earlier this year, represents a break from the decades-long rule of the former regime. Al-Shibani emphasized that the flag \u201cdoes not merely symbolize a state, but the will of a people who endured, resisted, and believed that freedom and justice are rights that must be claimed, not luxuries to be granted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The symbolic move comes amid broader efforts by the transitional government to normalize relations with the international community and restore Syria\u2019s role in global diplomacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the flag-raising, al-Shibani addressed the press and reiterated his government&#8217;s commitment to engaging the international community. \u201cThe world now needs to hear the demands of the Syrian people,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are open to dialogue and expect reciprocal treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also called for the lifting of international sanctions, arguing that they are no longer justified under the new government and continue to harm the Syrian people. \u201cWith the reasons for the sanctions now gone, they should be lifted.
