{"id":124510,"date":"2025-04-16T08:15:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-16T08:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=124510"},"modified":"2025-04-16T08:15:02","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T08:15:02","slug":"u-s-unlikely-to-oppose-saudi-plan-to-pay-syrias-debts-analyst","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/124510\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. unlikely to oppose Saudi plan to pay Syria\u2019s debts \u2013 Analyst"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> The United States is unlikely to oppose Saudi Arabia\u2019s reported plan to settle Syria\u2019s overdue debts to the World Bank, a political analyst said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abbas Kadhim, a political analyst based in Washington, told North Press that &#8220;Although the United States does not officially recognize the Syrian transitional government, it will not oppose any measure that helps ease the suffering of the Syrian people.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On April 14, Reuters cited informed sources stating that Saudi Arabia is considering paying approximately $15 million in arrears owed by Syria to the World Bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initiative is reportedly aimed at paving the way for international grants to support reconstruction efforts and bolster Syria\u2019s public sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The analyst emphasized that the proposed payments would be made directly to the World Bank and would not go into the hands of the Syrian authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A spokesperson for the Saudi Ministry of Finance told Reuters,&nbsp;&#8220;We do not comment on speculation, but make announcements, if and when they become official.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So far, neither the World Bank nor Syrian authorities have issued official statements on the matter.
