{"id":121843,"date":"2025-02-08T07:44:21","date_gmt":"2025-02-08T07:44:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=121843"},"modified":"2025-02-08T07:44:23","modified_gmt":"2025-02-08T07:44:23","slug":"canada-appoints-new-special-envoy-to-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/121843\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada appoints new special envoy to Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Friday the appointment of MP Omar Alghabra\u2014Member of Parliament for Mississauga Centre\u2014as Canada\u2019s new special envoy to Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Prime Minister\u2019s Office <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pm.gc.ca\/en\/news\/news-releases\/2025\/02\/07\/prime-minister-announces-new-special-envoy-syria\">stated<\/a>, &#8220;After decades of atrocities committed by the Assad regime, its rule has come to an end, starting a new chapter for Syria.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trudeau emphasized that during this transitional period, Canada remains steadfast in its support for the Syrian people\u2019s quest for a just and inclusive society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alghabra will advise both the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister M\u00e9lanie Joly on Canada\u2019s initiatives to address Syria\u2019s urgent needs and to foster a peaceful, inclusive future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He will engage with a wide array of stakeholders\u2014including experts, regional leaders, and international partners\u2014to promote transparent governance and the protection of human rights, according to the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alghabra, of Syrian descent himself, brings extensive parliamentary experience, having first been elected in 2006.
