HASAKAH, Syria (North Press)<\/strong> \u2013 The Armenian Union Party<\/strong> in Syria has urged the new government in Damascus<\/strong> to include Armenian representation<\/strong> in the upcoming national conference<\/strong>, calling for recognition of their historical role and rights in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement on Thursday, Imad Tetrian, Secretary-General of the Armenian Union Party<\/strong>, emphasized that Armenians have always been an integral part of Syria\u2019s social fabric<\/strong> and should not be considered a minority<\/strong> in the political discourse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We reject the term \u2018minority\u2019 that has recently been used in Syria,”<\/em> Tetrian told North Press. “Every community living on Syrian soil is a fundamental part of the nation. The Armenian people have deep roots in Syria and have never been a minority.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key Demands from the Armenian Community<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Tetrian outlined several demands that the Armenian Union Party believes should be addressed in Syria\u2019s new constitution and political framework<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • Official recognition of the Armenian language<\/strong> as part of Syria\u2019s national educational curriculum.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Guaranteed parliamentary representation<\/strong> for the Armenian community.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Full citizenship rights<\/strong> for Armenians still considered “foreigners” under Syria\u2019s existing legal system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Inclusion in the upcoming national dialogue conference<\/strong> in Damascus to ensure all ethnic and religious communities participate in shaping Syria\u2019s future.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    “If this is truly a \u2018Syrian National Conference for Dialogue,\u2019 then all components of Syrian society must be invited to participate\u2014without exclusion,”<\/em> Tetrian insisted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Historical Marginalization and the Call for Change<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Tetrian criticized past Syrian governments for marginalizing Armenian culture and language<\/strong>, stating that previous regimes allowed only private Armenian schools<\/strong> while refusing to integrate Armenian heritage into the national curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    “The former regime actively sidelined Armenian culture. While some private schools existed, the Armenian language was never officially accepted as part of Syria\u2019s educational system,”<\/em> he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Additionally, Tetrian raised concerns about stateless Armenians in Syria<\/strong>, many of whom have remained without Syrian nationality<\/strong> since the controversial 1962 census<\/strong>, which left tens of thousands of people\u2014primarily Kurds\u2014without official citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    “We must avoid repeating the mistakes of the past. The new Syrian government must guarantee full citizenship for all Armenians and other marginalized communities,”<\/em> he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Security Concerns and the Armenian Genocide Legacy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The Armenian community in Syria<\/strong> also expressed concerns about security threats from Turkey and Azerbaijan<\/strong>, which Tetrian described as historical enemies of the Armenian people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    “Recognizing Armenian identity and protecting Armenian communities is essential to preventing future acts of genocide,”<\/em> he asserted. “Turkey and Azerbaijan continue to threaten Armenian existence in the region, and Syria must ensure we are safeguarded from any form of persecution.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A Test for Syria\u2019s New Government<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The Armenian Union Party\u2019s demands highlight the larger challenge<\/strong> facing Syria\u2019s transitional leadership: how to ensure representation and equal rights<\/strong> for all ethnic and religious groups<\/strong> in the country\u2019s post-war governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The national conference in Damascus<\/strong> is expected to lay the groundwork for a new Syrian political structure<\/strong>, but it remains unclear whether minority groups\u2014including Armenians, Kurds, Assyrians, and others<\/strong>\u2014will be given an equal seat at the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Tetrian concluded with a direct call to the new Syrian leadership<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    “The responsibility of the Syrian government is to protect all communities, prevent exclusion, and build a truly inclusive state. We refuse to be sidelined once again.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
