{"id":115169,"date":"2024-07-06T07:50:07","date_gmt":"2024-07-06T07:50:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=115169"},"modified":"2024-07-06T07:50:09","modified_gmt":"2024-07-06T07:50:09","slug":"6-ngos-stress-syria-not-safe-for-voluntary-return-of-refugees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/115169\/","title":{"rendered":"6 NGOs stress Syria not safe for voluntary return of refugees"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> Six non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in the Middle East highlighted on Friday that Syria is still far from being suitable for refugees to return voluntarily and safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rescue.org\/uk\/press-release\/syrian-refugees-highlight-worsening-living-conditions-region-and-fewer-2-envisage\">statement<\/a> released by the NGOs emphasized the importance of continued support and protection for these refugees from refoulement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NGOs included the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), Durable Solutions Platform, International Rescue Committee (IRC), Syrian American Medical Society, Humanity &amp; Inclusion &#8211; Handicap International, and Mercy Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The statement cited UNHCR\u2019s annual intention survey, indicating that Syrian refugees in neighboring countries encounter reduced aid access, fewer income-earning prospects, and escalating social tensions with host communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite facing challenges in these countries, many Syrians feel that returning to Syria is not a viable option due to the ongoing conflict, lack of law and order, the presence of armed groups, and the risk of potential abuse by authorities upon their return, according to the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The statement emphasized that it is extremely important to make sure that leaders and policymakers listen to the voices of refugees, meet their requirements, and increase political support to find a lasting political resolution to the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Only then will Syrian refugees feel truly safe to return,&#8221; the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark Kaye, MENA Policy and Advocacy Director at the IRC, said that many Syrian refugees &#8220;would like to return one day, but not while it remains unsafe and unconducive inside Syria to do so.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kaye urged that a political solution to the Syrian conflict is needed but until then donors and hosting communities must continue supporting people in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>By Ster Youssef<\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 Six non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in the Middle East highlighted on Friday that Syria is still far from being suitable for refugees to return voluntarily and safely.
