{"id":114923,"date":"2024-06-26T06:56:54","date_gmt":"2024-06-26T06:56:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=114923"},"modified":"2024-06-26T06:56:56","modified_gmt":"2024-06-26T06:56:56","slug":"ngo-urges-iraqi-kurdistan-region-to-release-detained-syrian-journalist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/114923\/","title":{"rendered":"NGO urges Iraqi Kurdistan Region to release detained Syrian journalist"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>An American non-governmental organization specialized in defending journalists urged on Tuesday the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to &#8220;immediately&#8221; set a Syrian journalist free who has been arrested for eight months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), an NGO based in New York City, called on the Kurdish authorities in northern Iraq to &#8220;immediately and unconditionally&#8221; free Kurdish-Syrian journalist Suleiman Ahmad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ahmad, a Kurd from northern Syria, is an Arabic editor for the local news agency RojNews in the city of Sulaymaniyah, northern Iraq. He was arrested on Oct. 25, 2023 while entering Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) from Syria after paying a visit to his family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Security Directorate (Asayish), which is responsible for border security in Duhok Governorate, accused Ahmad of carrying out \u201csecret and illegal\u201d work for the outlawed Kurdistan Workers\u2019 Party (PKK), the <a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/2024\/06\/after-8-months-in-detention-syrian-journalist-sleman-ahmed-faces-spying-charges-in-iraq\/\">CPJ reported<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ara Khedr, spokesperson for the KRG&#8217;s Office of the Coordinator for International Advocacy, told CPJ in an email on May 26 that Ahmad had been arrested under the order of the Duhok Investigation Judge under Article 1 of Law No. 21 of 2003 and charged with espionage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Syrian journalist could face life imprisonment if convicted under Article 1 of acts intended to undermine the stability, sovereignty, and security of the Kurdistan Region\u2019s institutions, the CPJ said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is going to be tried by Duhok Criminal Court on June 30, RojNews editor-in-chief Botan Garmiyani and Ahmad\u2019s lawyers Nariman Ahmad and Reving Hruri told CPJ.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAccusing Sleman Ahmed [Suleiman Ahmad] of espionage and holding him for months before giving him access to his lawyers is yet another setback to press freedom in Iraqi Kurdistan,\u201d said CPJ Program Coordinator, Carlos Martinez de la Serna, in New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIraqi Kurdish authorities should release Ahmed immediately and drop all charges against him,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>By Jwan Shekaki <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 An American non-governmental organization specialized in defending journalists urged on Tuesday the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to &#8220;immediately&#8221; set a Syrian journalist free who has been arrested for eight months.
