{"id":100930,"date":"2023-07-10T20:33:57","date_gmt":"2023-07-10T20:33:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=100930"},"modified":"2023-07-10T20:33:59","modified_gmt":"2023-07-10T20:33:59","slug":"turkey-approves-to-forward-swedens-nato-bid-to-parliament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/100930\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkey approves to forward Sweden&#8217;s NATO bid to parliament"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has agreed to submit Sweden&#8217;s request to join NATO to the Turkish parliament, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stoltenberg\u2019s remarks come after finishing talks with Erdogan and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson ahead of a NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, due on July 10-11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPresident Erdogan has agreed to forward Sweden&#8217;s accession protocol to the Grand National Assembly [the Turkish parliament] as soon as possible and ensure ratification,\u201d Stoltenberg tweeted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NATO chief declined to provide a date for the ratification by the Turkish parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finland and Sweden formally applied to join NATO in May 2022 prompted by Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine in February but were met with huge rejection from Turkey and Hungary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turkey had rejected the NATO bids of the two Nordic countries, citing their alleged support for the Kurdistan Workers\u2019 Party (PKK), an outlawed group that has been engaged in a longstanding insurgency against Turkey since 1984. However, in March, Turkey ratified Finland\u2019s bid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the application is ratified, it would represent a significant move in the West&#8217;s efforts to counter Russia by strengthening the entire eastern flank of Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Editing by Farzand
