{"id":100654,"date":"2023-07-06T08:18:11","date_gmt":"2023-07-06T08:18:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=100654"},"modified":"2023-07-06T08:18:13","modified_gmt":"2023-07-06T08:18:13","slug":"iran-tried-to-seize-oil-tankers-near-strait-of-hormuz-us-navy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/100654\/","title":{"rendered":"<strong>Iran tried to seize oil tankers near Strait of Hormuz \u2013 US navy<\/strong> &nbsp;&nbsp;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013<\/strong> Iranian warships tried to seize two oil tankers passing through international waters&nbsp;near the Strait of Hormuz, the US Navy said on Wednesday, adding that it foiled both attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">US Navy Fifth Fleet spokesperson Timothy Hawkins said an Iranian navy vessel fired shots during its second seizure attempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the firing caused no casualties or major damage, He added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The Iranian navy did make attempts to seize commercial tankers lawfully transiting international waters,&#8221; Hawkins was quoted as saying. &#8220;The US Navy responded immediately and prevented those seizures.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hawkins did not elaborate on how the US Navy halted the seizure attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iran has not commented on the incident yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How common is the Iranian seizure attempt?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The US accuses Iran of&nbsp;seizing at least five commercial vessels&nbsp;in the last two years, as well as harassing several others, according to DW.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of the seizure and harassment incidents have taken place&nbsp;in and around the Strait of Hormuz. The narrow but strategic passageway of the Persian\/Arabian Gulf lies between Iran and Oman.
