HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>An official in the Water Directorate of Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) in Hasakah Governorate, northeast Syria,  stated on Wednesday that the city is facing a severe water crisis, with only half of the required amount of water being delivered daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On July 3, the AANES declared Hasakah a disaster area because of Turkey\u2019s continued water cut-off to the city and the surrounding areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One million people are suffering from a severe water crisis in Hasakah as Turkish forces and their affiliated armed opposition factions, aka Syrian National Army (SNA), continue to withhold water form Alouk water station, which is the main source of water for Hasakah and its towns and villages, said Sheikhmus Darwish, the groundwater geological expert in the AANES Water Directorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Water Directorate, along with humanitarian organizations working in the AANES-held areas, supplies the city of Hasakah and its countryside with water through mobile tankers from surface wells located in the city’s rural areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Darwish added, “Hasakah needs 80,000 cubic meters of water daily, but only half of this quantity is being delivered through mobile tankers.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solutions can be found through “the intervention of humanitarian organizations, the UNICEF, the [International Committee of the] Red Cross, and the Russian mediator to neutralize the Alouk station,” he explained. “We had communication channels with the Russian side and the aforementioned organizations in the past few days, but to no avail.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Informed sources from the Water Directorate told North Press that they used to supply the city of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) with an 8-megawatt electricity capacity, while the Alouk wells only need 3 megawatts to operate, but the Turkish side did not comply with the agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Darwish warned of the drying up of surface wells that provide Hasakah and its countryside with drinking water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He expected that the wells may dry up this month, portending a potential humanitarian catastrophe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The water directorate relies on surface wells in the village of Shumoka, west of Hasakah, and some wells in the Nafasha area, east of the city, to supply the region with water through tankers. \u201cHowever, some of these wells have started to dry up and are now out of service,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To avoid such catastrophe, he said, \u201cwe have finished studying a project to dig 20 wells south of Amuda [north of Hasakah] to extend pipelines to Hasakah city; the project will be announced soon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a previous statement to North Press, Issa Younes, the Deputy Co-chiar of Hasakah Water Directorate, said that Turkey has cut off water over 40 times during the past years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
