{"id":100359,"date":"2023-06-30T09:48:29","date_gmt":"2023-06-30T09:48:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/?p=100359"},"modified":"2023-06-30T09:48:31","modified_gmt":"2023-06-30T09:48:31","slug":"russia-arresting-wagner-members-in-syria-reports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/100359\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia arresting Wagner members in Syria \u2013 reports"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) \u2013 <\/strong>According to numerous reports, Russian forces in Syria may be arresting Wagner Group operatives in the country after <a href=\"https:\/\/npasyria.com\/en\/100058\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">last weekend&#8217;s insurrection<\/a> in southern Russia by the militia&#8217;s leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/wagner-group-detained-syria-prigozhin-1809583\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Newsweek<\/a>, citing several sources, says Wagner Group members were arrested at the Khmeimim Air Base, on Syria&#8217;s coast, as the munity unfolded in Russia. The arrested included a colonel and two lieutenant colonels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A day later, further arrests followed in Damascus, Suwayda, Deir ez-Zor, and in al-Suqaylabiyah, in Syria&#8217;s Ghab Plain in Hama Governorate. According to the New Arab, these arrests were conducted by Russia&#8217;s Military Police (MP) in conjunction with Syrian intelligence services. Other sources report that police visited Wagner headquarters in Deir ez-Zor, Hama and Damascus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dimitry Uktin, Wagner&#8217;s co-founder, denied any arrests had been conducted in Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Uncertainty surrounds Wagner&#8217;s future after last week&#8217;s events. The group has been active in Syria for the past few years, especially in combating ISIS in the desert between Deir ez-Zor and Palmyra, as well <a href=\"https:\/\/stj-sy.org\/en\/ukraine-wagner-group-begins-relocating-syrian-fighters-from-libya-to-russia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as recruiting Syrians for the war in Ukraine<\/a>. The mercenary group also boasts over considerable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/middle-east-and-africa\/2023\/06\/27\/what-next-for-wagners-african-empire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">military, economic and political ties<\/a> in over a dozen African countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A political analyst quoted by Newsweek says Russian President Vladimir Putin may be preparing to confiscate Wagner&#8217;s assets via corruption charges.
