About thirty young men and women are participating in preparing the first lyrical play in north-eastern Syria, under the supervision of the artist Hussein Khani, and theater director Mahmoud Jiqmaqi, where the rehearsals of the play started more than seven months ago in the hall of Baqi Khedo Center for Culture and Arts in the city of Kobani, northern Syria. The lyrical play revolves around the story of "Memê Alan", it was written by Abd al-Rahim Hakkari in 1919, and taken from the Kurdish oral literature. It is about the war and the defense of the homeland. The lyrics were written by students at Afrin University, composed by Hussein Khani.
The first experiment
Hussein Khani told North-Press that the work is considered the first experience in the Kurdish lyrical theater, where about 30 people from the choir group in Kobani will be relied upon to perform the play in about half an hour. Khani noted that the play will participate in the opening of the "Yekta" Theater Festival in Qamishli on the 27th of next March. The play will be performed in Kobani at the beginning of next March. Khani explained that their objective is to put a fingerprint on the Kurdish lyrical theater, pointing out that this theatrical work is considered the first of its kind in north-east Syria, in terms of the number of actors and extras, and the magnitude of the work. The lyrical play was previously performed at the Mitan III festival in the city of Afrin. He added that he is currently memorizing the actors' roles and achieving harmony between the extras and the main actors, especially since most of the actors will be playing in their first experience in this field.
Seven months of rehearsals
The young actress (participating in the play) Gulizer Bekki said that she has been training for seven months in performing her role in the lyrical and theatrical play, noting that they are facing difficulties in memorizing the lyrics of the songs and the dialogue roles, especially as they are participating for the first time in such work. She added that she plays the role of an elderly woman, explaining to the audience the story of the play, pointing out that the instructions provided by Hussein Khani regarding the nature of their role in the play during rehearsals, contribute to the development of their performance on a daily basis.
An epic historical story
Anwar Ahmed, who plays the main role in the play, explained to North-Press that the story of the play is long, and it tells an epic historical story about looting, war and the defense of homeland. He plays the role of "Memê Alan", the new groom who is forced to leave his wife in order to defend his homeland, he said. Ahmed added the story of the play focuses on the young man who left his house in order to defend his homeland, until he returns to his home, to be killed by his own mother by mistake, because of the honor.
