Syrian Democratic Council welcomes UN Inquiry report documenting violations
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press ) – On Friday, the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), the legislative body of the Autonomous Administration in North and East Syria, welcomed the report of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic, and called on the committee to visit northeastern Syria and verify its accusations regarding the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
The report condemns the violations committed by Turkish-backed armed opposition groups, war crimes, and the crimes of ethnic cleansing committed against Syrian Kurdish civilians in Afrin and Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain).
The report said members of the Syrian National Army committed violations against the civilians of Sere Kaniye and Afrin, and plundered Kurdish property in Afrin region in a coordinated manner.
In its statement, SDC confirmed what was stated in the report regarding violations by the opposition factions against Kurdish and Yezidi civilians under Turkish supervision, and attacks on religious and archaeological sites.
Paulo Pinheiro, a commissioner on the Commission of Inquiry, had said added that entire communities and cultures are under attack.
The SDC called on the international community to form an international court for war criminals to hold Turkey and its officials accountable and to place the occupied northern Syrian regions under the auspices of UN peacekeepers.
The report of the international investigation committee accused the Turkish armed opposition factions of committing war crimes, including the kidnapping of hostages, cruel treatment, torture, and rape.
