Syrian community in US rejects Syrian-Turkish normalization

RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – Syrian Community in the US informed Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu about their rejection of normalizing ties between the Syrian government and Turkey, a Syrian oppositionist said on Monday.

When Cavusoglu visited the US, he met Syrian American Council  (SAC), a council with close ties to Turkey and operates in the US.

Zaki Lababidi, president of the SAC, said that representatives of the Syrian community in the US met Cavusoglu and expressed their rejection of the Syrian-Turkish normalization.

Lababidi cited Cavusoglu as saying that the normalization is a “new political operation” after the stop of Astana and Geneva talks as Europe and the US are preoccupied with Russia-Ukraine war that started in February 2022.

He added the representatives told the Turkish Foreign Minister that the return of Syrian refugees must be voluntary and to safe areas.

Recently, dozens of protesters took to streets in areas held by Turkish-backed armed Syrian opposition factions, also known as the Syrian National Army (SNA),  against the Syrian-Turkish normalization.
