Gunmen target government checkpoints in Syria’s Daraa causing casualties

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – Three soldiers of Syrian government forces were injured on Tuesday after unidentified gunmen targeted two military checkpoints in Daraa al-Balad in Daraa Governorate, south Syria.

A local source told North Press unidentified gunmen, riding motorcycles, threw a bomb on the soldiers, guarding at al-Barid checkpoint in Daraa al-Balad, injuring three of them.

“One of the three injured soldiers sustained serious injuries, as he was transported to a hospital in Damascus, while the others received first aid at the National Hospital in Daraa,” the source added.

About an hour later, unidentified gunmen opened fire on al-Bahar checkpoint, near al-Bahar graveyard south of Daraa al-Balad, the source added.

The source stressed that clashes broke out between the two parties for a while; However, no casualties were recorded.

In July 2018, the Syrian opposition armed factions and Syrian government forces reached a settlement agreement mediated by Russia in the opposition-held areas in Daraa. Under the deal, the opposition militants who agreed to hand over their heavy weapons were handed settlement cards and allowed to stay in Daraa, while those opposed the agreement would go to Idlib, which is under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), formerly al-Nusra Front.

Since then, the governorate has been witnessing a state of security chaos, murders and kidnappings.
