Body of postal employee found in Syria’s Daraa
DARAA, Syria (North Press) – Residents of the eastern countryside of Daraa, a governorate southern Syria, found on Saturday the body of a person who was shot dead at close range.
A local source told North Press that residents found a corpse of an unknown person on the side of Damascus-Daraa Highway, near the town of Saida in the eastern countryside of Daraa.
The body bore traces of gunfire fired at close range and it was transported to the National Hospital in Daraa to be identified, according to the source.
After a short while, the family of the victim recognized him in the hospital, the source added.
The victim, Shadi al-Karki, hails from the town of Tafas, in the western countryside of Daraa and works as an employee in a telephone exchange in the town.
Al-Karki used to work for local armed factions before joining settlement and reconciliation agreement.
In July 2018, the opposition armed factions and government forces reached a settlement agreement mediated by Russia in the opposition-held areas in Daraa Governorate. Under the deal, the opposition militants who agreed to hand over their heavy weapons were handed a settlement card and allowed to stay in Daraa, while those opposed the agreement would go to Idlib, which is under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
Since the government forces re-captured Daraa in 2018, the governorate has been living in a state of insecurity, with assassinations, arrests and thefts taking place on a daily basis.
On September 18, unidentified gunmen killed two people in separate incidents in Daraa.
