Constant Turkish shelling targets north of Syria’s Aleppo

ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) – On Saturday, Turkish forces and their affiliated armed Syrian opposition factions shelled outskirts of the village of Sheikh Issa in the northern countryside of Aleppo with seven mortars, causing material damages.

This comes after the village of “Ibbin” of the Sherawa district in Afrin countryside was shelled with five mortars last night.

Coincidently, Turkish artillery shelled outskirts of the town of Tel Rifaat with two shells that fell on agrarian lands, exclusive sources told North Press.

A military source said the Syrian government forces targeted with a number of shells Tel Jibrin-Marea road in north of Aleppo, causing material damages.

The town of Tel Rifaat, 35 km north of Aleppo city, has been a shelter for Afrin displaced people since 2018 following the Turkish invasion of Afrin and its countryside which resulted in the displacement of about 300.000 of the original inhabitants.

Turkey has escalated its attacks on areas in north and northeast Syria, using artillery and drones following Tehran Summit, in which Turkey failed to obtain a green light by Iran and Russia to invade the region.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has recently announced plans to carry out another major military cross-border incursion into northern Syria. Erdogan specified his targets in the two northern Syrian cities of Manbij and Tel Rifaat.

On July 1, Erdogan said that Ankara’s new military operation in northern Syria could begin at any moment.

“The time has come to clear these lands from the terrorist organizations,” Erdogan threatened during Tehran Summit.

Tehran Summit, on July 19, brought together presidents of each of Iran, Russia and Turkey with the Syrian issue and Turkish threats on the top of its agenda.

August has been one of the deadliest months in north and northeast Syria. Turkish drone strikes were active. The strikes allegedly targeting military sites resulted in civilian’s deaths too, many were children.

In a press release in August, Save the Children said that at least 40 children were killed or injured in up to August 24 in north and northeast Syria.

“We urgently call on all parties to the conflict to de-escalate tensions and to take all possible steps to keep children safe from harm. No child should ever be in the firing line,” said Beat Rohr, Save the Children’s Interim Response Director for Syria.
