Assyrian Organization, Syriac Union in Syria’s northeast sign Understanding document

WASHINGTON, US (North Press) – Two political officials in the Assyrian Organization and the Syriac Union indicated said on Tuesday that the recent document of understanding between the two parties came after reducing political differences and sensing the threat that threatens their future in Syria.

“After the passage of 11 years of the Syrian uprising, the political differences between the Assyrian and Chaldean Syriac people in the region are now much less than they were in 2011,” Karam Doula, a member of the Political Bureau of the Assyrian Organization, told North Press.

The people of these communities, Doula added, have begun to sense the existential danger that threatens their future in Syria

“The recent understanding reached between the Assyrian Democratic Organization and the Syriac Union Party has come as a response to the demands and needs of these communities,” he said.

The two parties agreed on many common points related to their vision for the future of Syria; they agreed to continue joint work to overcome some issues related to the immigrants’ property and other issues, he added.

According to the Syrian politician, concluding this agreement was easy. The two parties were able to take this decision themselves, as they don’t have other political authorities to resort to.

Meanwhile, Sennacherib Barsoum, co-chair of the Syriac Union Party, told North Press that “there has been an understanding on the general vision of Syria and the future of our Syriac-Assyrian-Chaldean people in the region, and these matters are of great importance to our people.”

Barsoum pointed out that this convergence between the political blocs of the Syriac and Assyrian parties within the opposition Syrian National Coalition and the Syriac Union serves the higher Syrian interest and creates a positive atmosphere for joint action.

The issue of the entry of the Assyrian Democratic Organization, which is in the National Coalition of Opposition Forces, was not an issue in the discussions that they had.

Barsoum expressed his hope that the Assyrian Democratic Organization and other parties would be contributors to the vision of the Autonomous Administration which is based on local governance.
