Intermittent clashes persist in vicinity of al-Sina’a prison in Syria’s Hasakah

HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) is still tightening the screw on the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) militants, while the surrounding area of al-Sina’a prison in Hasakah, northeast Syria, is still witnessing intermittent clashes, a security source of the SDF told North Press.  

Agents of ISIS sleeper cells are besieged in small hideouts within Guweiran neighborhood, “They will be forced to surrender,” the source who were in the scene, added.

The surrounding area of al-Sina’a prison has been witnessing intermittent clashes between SDF and ISIS sleeper cells since the early hours on Saturday.

Shooting is successively heard from the northwestern part of the prison in Guweiran neighborhood, while aircrafts of the US-led Global Coalition is still  flying over the area.

Last night the Global Coalition aircraft fired flare bombs over the industrial prison during the clashes.   

“We have provided some airstrikes to support them as they deal with this particular prison break,” in response to a question from VOA, Pentagon press secretary John Kirby told reporters Friday.

Meanwhile, the SDF and the Internal Security Forces of North and East Syria (Asayish) are still working to secure safe paths to resident fleeing the clashes.  

“Our fight against ISIS continues and we will not stop until all criminal elements are put behind bars,” SDF Commander-in-Chief, Mazloum Abdi, tweeted on Friday.

Al-Sina’a prison in the city of Hasakah, one of the prisons run by SDF that contains about 4,000 foreigners from about 50 countries, witnessed several unsuccessful escape attempts and jailbreaks by ISIS inmates the last of which was launched in October 2021.
