Syria’s Kobani University opens new departments
KOBANI, Syria (North Press) – Northern Syria’s Kobani University has announced the opening of new departments, colleges, and institutes, coinciding with the start of university selection for the academic year 2021-2022.
During the 2020-2021 academic year, Kobani University had the College of Arts, which included Kurdish Literature, and the College of Science with the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Science, in addition to the Department of Medical Laboratory.
Shervan Muslim, an administrative official at Kobani University, told North Press that the opening of the new departments came after the increase in the number of students applying for secondary school certificates in the Euphrates region, in addition to changing the structure of existing colleges.
The Institute of Educational Sciences will also be opened with five departments: “Geography, English, Teaching, Biology, and the Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry,” according to Muslim.
He added that the Department of Arabic Literature will be added to the Faculty of Arts, which previously included only Kurdish literature. The Department of Anesthesia and Nursing will also be added to the Medical Institute.
The Technical Institute will also be opened and its building will be in Rojava Dam (formerly Tishrin Dam).
The official pointed out that the administrative and legal institute was opened, along with the new departments and institutes, and that the duration of study in the institutes will be two and a half years, while the duration of study in colleges will be four years.
Muslim said that each department of the institutes has a maximum of 35 students, adding: “The universities of “Rojava, Kobani, and al Sharq in northeastern Syria can have all students and fulfill their wishes.”
“We’ve made the necessary preparations and we are ready to receive the students. Committees have been assigned to explain the selection, which starts from July 31 until 19 August,” Muslim said.
The opening of any new section requires two basic conditions, the first of which is to meet the needs and requirements of the region for this section. The second is the presence of the teaching staff who supervises the department, according to Muslim.
The university’s need for lecturers was announced a few months ago to manage the new departments, as 20 lecturers were contracted, including holders of doctorate and master’s degrees, in addition to a university degree, which is the lowest certificate required to teach at the university

However, there are difficulties facing the university, including the lack of staff holding higher degrees, which prevents the opening of more departments and colleges, in addition to logistical problems related to preparing curricula and obtaining sources and references, according to Muslim.
The academic year 2021-2022 will begin on September 26.
Kobani University was established in September of 2017 with only two colleges; College of Basic Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics Departments) and the College of Arts (Department of Kurdish Language and Literature).
