First day of the second full lockdown in Syria’s north Kobani

KOBANI, Syria (North Press) – With the first day of the second full lockdown which was imposed by the Crisis Management Team in the Euphrates region, the city of Kobani, northern Syria, witnessed on Tuesday, a complete closure of shops and markets.

Hikmat Ahmad, the adviser of the Health Board in the Euphrates Region, told North Press that the benefit of the first full lockdown, which extended between 15 and 25 November, was good.

“The full lockdown was of great benefit in reducing the movement of the citizens, reducing the number of coronavirus infections, and the number of deaths to a large extent,” Ahmad added.

The number of the infections from November 1 to 15 reached 111 in addition to 28 deaths, while it reduced to 28 infections and 4 deaths only during the full lockdown from November 16 to 25, according to Ahmad.

“This confirms that the full lockdown is of great benefit in reducing the number of infections and deaths as it contributed to the physical distancing and the lack of direct contact.”

Ahmad pointed out that in order for the lockdown to continue, residents had to secure their daily food needs and do their necessary work. Therefore, there was a five-day period to undertake these needs and carry out these works.

The crowding in the markets and streets during the five days of the partial curfew led to the increase in the number of the infections again, where 26 new cases were recorded, as he said.

Ahmed called on residents to commit to the full lockdown imposed for the second time for ten days, pointing to the citizens’ presence in the streets on the first days of the closure.

He suggested that about 95% of the residents adhered to the full lockdown decision on the first day.

“We hope that the residents will abide by the full lockdown which imposed again for ten days,” he concluded.

The Crisis Management Team in the Euphrates Region approved last Tuesday, the imposition of a partial lockdown for five days, after the end of a full lockdown that lasted ten days.

On November 30, the city of Kobani witnessed an overcrowding in the markets, foodstuffs stores, and groceries on the eve of imposing a second full lockdown as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
